Retention

Numerous studies have identified the five core factors that influence retention:

1.  Managers

2.  Quality of learning and development

3.  Culture and work environment

4.  Remuneration, and

5.  Potential for personal growth.

Learning and development is a key consideration for retaining talent and growing the organisation’s knowledge capital.

Performance

The provision of training does not necessarily translate into learning. A lack of skill is often not the core reason for poor performance.  More often it is support, opportunity or motivation, that account for the largest proportion of performance issues.
  • support from the manager, i.e. clarity of expectations;
  • opportunity, i.e. do they practice a skill often enough to do it well; and
  • motivation, i.e. are the incentives and recognition right
